Loss moves Cards into two way tie
The Colorado Rockies hoped to continue their success after sweeping the San Diego Padres last week but the St. Louis Cardinals, playing for their playoff lives, managed to hold off the Rockies before taking the lead in the 4th inning when Carlos Martinez doubled in two runs.
The win moves St. Louis into a two way tie with the SF Giants for the second NL Wild Card spot.
“It really helped that I was helping my cause,” Martinez said through a translator. “Not only my cause but also the team. I knew that the minute that the game was tied, we were going to come back a lot more aggressive and a lot more positive to be able to have the outcome that we had.”
Tyler Anderson started out shaky giving up runs to Martinez and Randall Grichuk who slammed his 23rd home run but recovered by the fourth inning to strike out seven. He gave up eight hits and five runs, two of them earned with no walks.
“Tonight my focus was to try to get ahead, try to throw a lot more strikes than I did last time, and stay out of hitter’s counts,” Anderson said.
Game two kicks off at 7:40 at Coors Field. Taking the mound for your Rockies will be LHP Jorge De La Rosa (8-8, 5.22 ERA) while the Cards will send out Adam Wainwright (11-9, 4.51 ERA).
